Austin Longhorns

Texas Baseball Had A Better Day Than You

Did anyone else today land the No. 1 recruit in baseball while also simultaneously becoming the No. 1 recruiting class in 2020? Yeah, didn’t think so.

A hell of a job by the Longhorn baseball program. Because the fact of the matter is this, we were abysmal in baseball last season. The Horns were the only team in the Big 12 to not qualify for the conference tournament, packing up their bags and heading on their summer vacay in just mid-May. The season was an unmitigated disaster. Just no way around it. David Pierce knew it. I knew it. You knew it. Bevo fucking knew it. But Coach Pierce didn’t sit around and cry about it and the Horns didn’t get antsy and fire him. Both Pierce and UT were calm, cool and collected and promised to turn the ship around this offseason. And they sure as hell have done so.

First, we immediately went out and got Huston Street and Troy Tulowitzki to sign on as assistants. No better way to turn around a program, while also getting players and fans excited for the upcoming season than bringing in two legends/MLB All Stars. Name me another school who has two assistant coaches on the staff with a combined 26 years in The Big Show (Huston and Troy each having played 13 seasons)? I’ll wait.

Then of course today the No. 1 recruit in all of baseball, Jared Kelley officially commits to Texas. This dude is an ABSOLUTE stud too. This past December, he was named to Team USA Developmental program and helped the 18U National Team win gold at the 2018 COPABE U-18 Pan American Championship. During his junior year season, Kelley went 11-0 with a 0.24 ERA and helped lead the team to the regional finals.

When you have both the most athletic coaching staff in college baseball and most athletic players in college baseball, good things are sure to happen.

Bottom line, Texas Baseball Is Back.
