Restaurant Business just put out their annual Top 100 Independents and to no ones surprise Matt’s El Rancho made the list at No. 85. As a passionate and dedicated patron myself, I would be lying if I said it didn’t bring joy to my queso fueled heart to see Austin’s premiere restaurant get the recognition it deserves on the National stage. But at the same time, I also don’t need Restaurant Business to tell me El Rancho’s elite. I’ve known that my whole life.
Atmosphere: 10/10
Service: 10/10
Margaritas: 10/10
Queso: 10/10
Tortillas: 10/10
Every entre on the menu: 10/10
So to me this is not a shocker. However, I will say the numbers are pretty wild. Bringing in $13 million annually making Mexican food is absolutely insane. That means El Rancho is bringing in more money a year than Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes combined. Balling.
Also, if you look at all the other restaurants above El Rancho on the Top 100 list it’s steakhouses or other fancy type restaurants out of New York with average meals reaching over $100. El Rancho though is bringing in $13 milly with an average of just $25 per meal. That’s big time.
Which begs the question, does this settle the debate that Austin does in fact have the best mexican food out of every city in the country? Clearly, the answer has to be yes. Good for us.
For those at home wondering my go-to order: 5 dots, 2 Large Bobs and 2 asadero tacos on flour, no onions.
PS: Shoutout to my fantasy football league — two weeks left in the regular season and this years El Rancho Queso Dump Loser is a tight race between Ben, Ryan and Trey, with both Ben and Ryan already previously having to dump in years past. Losers, man.
