After firing longtime head coach, Ron Rivera, the Panthers began their search to fill the vacancy last week by interviewing ex-Packers coach Mike McCarthy.
And now they are reportedly set to interview their second candidate, Matt Rhule:
Obviously, if you’re a Baylor fan this is not the news you want to be waking up to just days before the Sugar Bowl matchup against Georgia. But I guess you can try to sleep easy knowing Panthers team owner, David Tepper, said it would be a “tough” transition for a college coach, although he wasn’t ready to rule it out.
On the flip side, what could be more tough than turning a lowly 1-11 Baylor team into a 11-2 just two years later? Because that’s what I’d be screaming if I’m Rhule in my interview with the Panthers.
Also, don’t forget Rhule was close to leaving Baylor last season, when he was in the running to be the next head coach of the Jets but apparently turned it down when the Jets were unwilling to let Rhule hire his own coaching staff.
To me, it seems inevitable Rhule will make the jump to the NFL. It’s just a matter of time. He wouldn’t be going on these interviews if that wasn’t the case. And can you really blame him? I’ve never been to Charlotte, North Carolina but something tells me it’s an upgrade from Waco, Texas.
