The NFL Owes Ricky Williams An Apology

Think about the thing you love most in life. The thing you would risk it all for. Well, Ricky Williams loves smoking weed that much but 10x more. And this love/passion cost him a shit ton of money during his NFL career.

In 2004, Ricky tested positive for weed 3 times, eventually facing a $650,000 fine and a 4-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. However, instead of showing up for training camp the next season, he disclosed his intent to retire from professional football.

And he followed through with that intent– for one season. Because instead of playing football, Ricky spent the entire year studing the ancient Indian system of holistic medicine at the California College of Ayurveda. Which as you probably can guess is wildly different from NFL football:

The next season though Ricky officially returned to the Dolphins, paid back a percentage of his signing bonus and completed his 4-game suspension.

But as I said before, Ricky fucking LOVES weed and the following season it was again announced that he had violated the NFL drug policy for the 4th time. Ricky was suspended for the entire 2006 season.

However, like all great Longhorns he didn’t quit. He AGAIN made another comeback and when it was all said in done eventually played 11 season in the NFL, retiring with Baltimore in 2011.

While Ricky did have a long, successful career — racking up 10,009 rushing yrds and 66 TDs, it’s hard to not think what could have been if the NFL would’ve just let him smoke some weed and chill. Ricky also clearly still thinks about this too:

But time (and weed) heals all wounds, and now over a decade later Ricky is doing just fine as a titan in the weed biz:
